Parasites in algae mass culture
نویسندگان
چکیده
Parasites are now known to be ubiquitous across biological systems and can play an important role in modulating algal populations. However, there is a lack of extensive information on their role in artificial ecosystems such as algal production ponds and photobioreactors. Parasites have been implicated in the demise of algal blooms. Because individual mass culture systems often tend to be unialgal and a select few algal species are in wide scale application, there is an increased potential for parasites to have a devastating effect on commercial scale monoculture. As commercial algal production continues to expand with a widening variety of applications, including biofuel, food and pharmaceuticals, the parasites associated with algae will become of greater interest and potential economic impact. A number of important algal parasites have been identified in algal mass culture systems in the last few years and this number is sure to grow as the number of commercial algae ventures increases. Here, we review the research that has identified and characterized parasites infecting mass cultivated algae, the techniques being proposed and or developed to control them, and the potential impact of parasites on the future of the algal biomass industry.

Use of chicken serum as a good replacement for the fetal calf serum in cultivation of promastigotes of Leishmania major
Genus Leishmania is a protozoan parasite that causes different severe diseases. Fetal Calf Serum (FCS) is the major part of the Leishmania culture media, for mass cultivation and the most expensive ingredient in these media. In the present work, the efficacy of chicken serum was evaluated in Leishmania culture media. The results indicated that, the (10%) chicken serum enriched culture medium su...

Nitrate and phosphate are abundant in urban wastewater. We evaluated the efficiency of nitrate and phosphate removal from wastewater by Scenedesmus obliquus and its use as a medium for Scenedesmus obliquus. Samples were collected from the effluent of central wastewater treatment in Gorgan. This experiment was done by 3 treatments and 6 replications that effluent with 100%, 50% and 0% were dilut...
متن کاملPhylogeny and biogeography of an uncultured clade of snow chytrids.
Numerous studies have shown that snow can contain a diverse array of algae known as 'snow algae'. Some reports also indicate that parasites of algae (e.g. chytrids) are also found in snow, but efforts to phylogenetically identify 'snow chytrids' have not been successful. We used culture-independent molecular approaches to phylogenetically identify chytrids that are common in long-lived snowpack...
متن کاملEffect of culture depth on the growth of Gracilariopsis persica with the potential for mariculture in the Persian Gulf (Bandar Abbas)
We conducted this study to investigate the effect of culture depth of red algae Gracilaropsis persica on the growth and biomass production of this species. Three culture depth of 5, 6, and 7 m were used to cultivate algae in the Persian Gulf (Bandar Abbas) for 45 days. Algae was collected from its natural environment and cultivated on polyethylene rope in the sea. We measured relative growth ra...
متن کاملCharacterization of Amoeboaphelidium protococcarum, an Algal Parasite New to the Cryptomycota Isolated from an Outdoor Algal Pond Used for the Production of Biofuel
Mass culture of algae for the production of biofuels is a developing technology designed to offset the depletion of fossil fuel reserves. However, large scale culture of algae in open ponds can be challenging because of incidences of infestation with algal parasites. Without knowledge of the identity of the specific parasite and how to control these pests, algal-based biofuel production will be...
